PLACE VALUE

What is place value?

Place value is a positional system of notation in which the position of a number with respect to a point determines its value. Numbers, such as 495,784, have six digits.  Each digit is a different place value.

Expanded form is a way of writing numbers so that all that is hidden about them comes out into the open. Expanded form shows the number expanded into an addition statement. The expanded form of 3,574 is 3,000 + 500 + 70 + 4
Standard form is the reverse of expanded form. You begin with expanded form and change it to the way we normally write numbers.
   3000 + 500 + 70 + 4
Do the addition and you get 3,574 (the standard form).
